Painting as an Act of Transformation in Human Consciousness
Project Statement
Through the act of painting I transform my consciousness. Through the act of consciousness I transform my painting. This process is cyclical and symbolized by the ouroboros; a circular emblem depicting a serpent swallowing its tail as a symbol of wholeness. The end result is a painting which represents evidence of a psychophysical process. The integration of intelligence with emotion, and intuition with sensation which is then expressed as wholeness through the symbolic language of representational painting. I behold the inner world; the landscape, architecture and archetypes of the psyche. I offer you a moment to join me in introspection and reflection; within the realm of the deeply human.
Psyche Redeemed explores the human psyche’s process of individuation or wholeness through shadow work. This transformation is achieved through the hero’s journey which is a cyclical event. It begins with a call to adventure, followed by challenges and temptations, death and rebirth, atonement and return. The Greek goddess Psyche, depicted in the central panel, represents one of the few remaining female figures in Western mythology who survived this transformative journey. Here Psyche is represented by my daughter Demeter who is on the verge of her own transformation and one of many hero’s journeys which she shall embark upon in this lifetime. The “eyes” on her wings looking back at the viewer represent Mother Nature as protector, nurturer, and guide. The Mother who provides for all of creation through the supreme intelligence of design.
Artist Bio
In brief, I am nothing. No one. A conduit for universal golden light. Darkness within darkness. Born and hardly raised in the desert and open sky outside Santa Fe, New Mexico. I am an autonomous mother and until recently, a self taught artist. Now, as I approach an MFA in Visual Studies from Pacific Northwest College of Art, I consider myself fluent in painting.
