Empowering Threads Collection: Fashion, Identity, and Choice for Iranian Women
Project Statement
Through my work, I explore and showcase the transformative power of design and fashion in the everyday lives of Iranian women. I depict three dresses that symbolize the evolution from traditional school uniforms, which were once characterized by Islamic rules, to more stylish and expressive garments that reflect choice, individuality, and empowerment. Each dress represents a significant stage in this transformation, demonstrating the journey of Iranian women as they navigate societal expectations and assert their agency through fashion. Designers and fashion play a crucial role in promoting social justice. By challenging norms and reimagining traditional attire, designers have the ability to reshape societal perceptions and promote self-expression. They empower women to reclaim their identity and challenge patriarchal structures through innovative designs and creative expression.
These dresses serve as a powerful testament to the resilience and determination of Iranian women in the face of adversity. Fashion is not just about clothing; it is a form of resistance and empowerment in daily life. Every outfit is a battleground where Iranian women assert their autonomy and challenge oppressive norms. Each material choice carries social, political, and historical significance, from the restrictive Maghna’e to the defiant act of burning scarves. Iranian women reclaim their narrative and power of choice through fashion and style. My work highlights the transformative potential of fashion in challenging societal norms and promoting individual agency. It celebrates the courage and resilience of Iranian women in asserting their identity and fighting for their rights.
Artist Bio
Sanaz Masoumi is a Persian fashion designer and textile artist passionate about making one-of-a-kind sculptures, garments and accessories. She is the owner of Ara Art and Design Studio, a fashion and sculpture studio where she creates items that foster individual choice and a deeper connection to nature. The vision for her designs are inspired by society, history, culture, nature and craft.
Creating art is like breathing for her. Her endless passion for artistic creation has led her to pursue art and design both academically and professionally. Sanaz has more than 10 years of experience working as a fashion designer, interior designer and creative director while managing her brand in her home country.
